What is Hot Dip Galvanising?

Hot dip galvanising (HDG) is when steel is passed through a bath of molten zinc coating film to create a protective layer. Regular steel is made of iron which when exposed to moisture will begin to rust. The liquid zinc bonds to the iron in the steel forming a protective layer, making it corrosion resistant. The steel sheet can then be spun into a finished part with the zinc coating staying intact during the metal spinning process. The finished part resists corrosion and no additional zinc coatings are required.

Reaction with other commodities

When mixed with yellow brass, galvanised steel causes dezincification to occur, this is a form of corrosion and weakening of the brass where the zinc within the brass dissolves. Galvanised steel also causes electrolytic action when combined with nonferrous metals (i.e. copper), this is a reaction that speeds up the process of oxidation. Hence, it is crucial to only use one type of material.

Cannot be used underground

Galvanised steel cannot be used for structures that are underground as it often conceals defects underneath the zinc coating on the steel.
